What I would like to point out is that Route 21 is maintained by the State, the NJDOT and Broad is maintained by the City of Newark.
Route 21 McCarter Highway a road that regularly kills and injures people in a predominantly Black city and run by the state, the same state that seems completely OK with segregated schools, hyper-segretation, and some of the highest infant mortality and maternal death rates in the United States.
Broad Street is run by Newark, a predominantly Black city and I can’t help but think that could be why Broad Street looks vastly different than Route 21.
Broad Street seems as if people are attempting to not kill people and Route 21 seems as if it’s actively trying to kill people.
Do I think race has to do with this?
In New Jersey, definitely.
